The History of Video Game Consoles
2nd Generation Consoles (Overview)

The 2nd generation of consoles brought us colored graphics, external sound and music capabilities, and single button joysticks. In addition, it was not until the 2nd generation of consoles that each game became genuinely unique in playability and features, and it was not until the Atari 2600 that the world saw mass production and distribution of countless third party games. It was the 2nd generation of game consoles that initially transformed electronic gaming from a novel concept into a serious market and entertainment venue. During this generation, many arcade games were ported to home game consoles, and other original classics such as Pitfall were created. With hundreds of popular titles to chose from, the 2nd generation of consoles provided an endless amount of entertainment for millions of children and adults.
