The History of Video Game Consoles
6th Generation Consoles (Overview)

The 6th generation of gaming consoles allowed users to play DVDs, music CDs, and connect to the Internet. Internal hard drives were also being integrated, and the consoles more appropriately represented complete entertainment centers rather than simple gaming devices. Along with true 3D surround sound capabilities, these consoles began supporting HDTV technologies. The processing power within 6th generation consoles was many hundreds of times greater than the earlier generations of consoles. In a sense, the systems were complete computer systems bundled up into a standalone game console. The 3D graphics were less blocky and choppy than the fifth generation, and photorealistic graphics and effects were achievable especially since 6th generation consoles supported far greater resolutions and technologies than any in the past.
