The History of Video Game Consoles
5th Generation Consoles (Overview)

The 5th generation of gaming marked an entire new revolution in the way games and systems were produced. For the first time, consoles leaped out of the traditional 2D world and began incorporating true 3D rendering capabilities and color depths that mimicked real life (over 16.7 million possible colors). The integration of 3D into games paved the way for an endless supply of new concepts and ideas. During this era of gaming, many of the classics including Super Mario were redeveloped in 3D. All the while, the technology powering such machines continued to evolve. With disk media consisting of CD-ROMS and high-capacity cartridges, unmatched quality and details could be packed into each game. At the release of these 5th generation consoles, the gaming world as everyone knew it was changed forever.
