Sony PlayStation 2

Sony PlayStation 2

The Sony PlayStation 2 was released five years after its original landmark gaming console release. Technically, the PS2 blew every prior game console out of the water. With processing speeds nearly ten times faster than the original PlayStation, much faster disc access speeds, DVD playback capabilities, ultra-high resolutions, and 5.1 audio support, the PS2 became more than just a simple gaming console-it became an entire entertainment center. Additional accessories such as a remote control for DVD playback and an online component were also made available. PS2 games are still being produced, and 120 million PS2s have been sold worldwide.

Microsoft Xbox

Microsoft Xbox

Microsoft first entered the game console business with the Xbox. The hardware components inside of this console closely matched that of a personal computer: A Pentium III processor, a GeForce styled VPU, a hard drive, the Windows 2000 kernel, and the DirectX 8.1 engine. The Xbox was the first mainstream system to include a hard drive (used for downloading content and storing game files), and it also supported HDTV and rich 3D surround sound. With such an increase in processing power and video components, the 3D objects on screen at times seemed indistinguishable from real-life. The Xbox sold 24 million consoles worldwide.
